What is a crab unit?

The term “Morris Crab Unit” most commonly refers to a component used in overhead material handling equipment, specifically a type of hoist trolley manufactured or supplied by a company associated with the Morris name (like Morris Material Handling, or the historical Herbert Morris company).

Here’s a breakdown:

  • Crab Unit: In the context of cranes and material handling, a “crab” is the assembly that carries the hoist (the mechanism that lifts the load) and travels horizontally along the bridge or girders of an overhead crane. It allows the load to be moved across the width of the building.

    • Crab units are typically used on double-girder overhead cranes.

  • Morris: The name “Morris” is connected to several historical and modern engineering companies, most relevantly Herbert Morris Ltd. (later Morris Material Handling), which has a long history of manufacturing cranes, hoists, and lifting equipment in the UK.

Therefore, a Morris Crab Unit is a wire rope hoist or lifting mechanism mounted on a trolley assembly designed to traverse the main beams of an overhead crane, and it was produced by a company bearing the Morris name. Different types of crab units exist, such as:

  • Standard Crab Unit (Type D): A compact design for medium safe working loads (SWL).

  • Low Headroom Crab Unit (Type DA/DQA): Designed to minimise the space required above the crane for installation, maximising the height of lift.

  • Twin Barrel Crab Unit (Type Z): Used for heavy-duty or very high load applications.
