Jib Crane
A jib crane is a type of overhead lifting equipment commonly used in localised work areas for repetitive and specific material handling tasks. Their compact design and rotational capability make them ideal for individual workstations, assembly lines, warehouses, and construction sites where space might be limited or where they need to supplement a larger overhead crane system. Essentially, a jib crane consists of a horizontal beam, known as the jib or boom, that supports a movable hoist and trolley.
Jibs Key Components and Functionality
The main components work in harmony to provide precise and efficient lifting:
- Mast/Pillar: The vertical support member, which is anchored to the floor, ceiling, or a building column/wall.
- Jib/Boom: The horizontal arm that extends from the mast. It supports the hoist and trolley and can rotate within a fixed arc.
- Hoist and Trolley: The hoist is the lifting mechanism (manual, electric, or pneumatic), while the trolley allows the hoist to move horizontally along the length of the jib.
Rotation: Jib cranes offer rotation, ranging from a 180-200 degree arc for wall-mounted models to a full 360-degree rotation for freestanding or mast-style cranes.
Jib Crane Types and Applications
The versatility of jibs comes from their different mounting configurations:
- Freestanding Jib: These are mounted to a foundation on the floor and can typically offer a full 360-degree rotation. They are the most adaptable type and can be used both indoors and outdoors.
- Wall-Mounted Jib: Attached directly to a structural wall or building column, they save floor space and usually offer 180-200 degrees of rotation. They are perfect for individual bays or along a production line.
- Mast-Type Jib Cranes: Supported by the floor at the bottom and a building structure above, they require less floor space and no special foundation like a freestanding unit.
- Articulating Jib Cranes: Featuring a multi-section, hinged boom, these cranes are designed to navigate around obstacles and reach into crowded work areas, offering greater precision and flexibility.
