Grab Overhead Cranes: Powering Bulk Material Handling

A grab overhead crane is a specialised type of overhead travelling crane designed primarily for the efficient handling and movement of bulk materials. Unlike cranes that use hooks and slings, our machinery is equipped with a large, heavy-duty mechanical or hydraulic grab attachment (often called a clamshell bucket or orange peel grab) that allows it to scoop, lift, and transfer loose cargo such as coal, sand, gravel, ore, grains, and refuse.

Key Components and Operation of Grab Overhead Cranes

The core of the system is a traditional overhead crane, which consists of parallel runways, a travelling bridge girder, and an electric hoist/trolley system. The unique feature is the grab mechanism, which is controlled by a dedicated hoisting system. In a typical operation:

  • The crane positions the trolley over the material pile.
  • The grab is then lowered in an open position.
  • The hoisting mechanism closes the jaws of the grab, digging into and capturing a significant volume of the bulk material.
  • The material is lifted, moved horizontally along the bridge and runways, and finally discharged at your designated location by opening the grab.

Applications and Advantages

Grab overhead cranes are indispensable in various heavy industries and logistics hubs:

  • Ports and Docks: For unloading materials from ship holds into storage or vice versa.
  • Power Plants: Managing vast stockpiles of coal or biomass fuel.
  • Steel Mills: Handling scrap metal.
  • Storage Yards: Moving aggregates, sand, and cement components.
  • Waste Management: Processing and transferring municipal solid waste.
The primary advantage of these cranes is their high efficiency and speed in moving large volumes of material, offering a far more productive solution than manual labour or smaller machinery for bulk tasks. They are built for continuous, heavy-duty service and are essential for maintaining flow in facilities that rely on constant processing and operation.
