Crane Repairs FAQs
How often should my overhead crane be inspected?
The frequency depends on the service class and usage, but generally, a frequent inspection (daily to monthly, visually checking operating mechanisms) and a periodic inspection (monthly to annually, detailed inspection including load testing and disassembly of critical components) are required by standards like HSE. Regular inspections help catch minor issues before they require major repairs.
What are the most common reasons an overhead crane needs repair?
Common issues include worn out brake components, damaged wire rope or hoist chains, electrical malfunctions (e.g., contactor wear or wiring faults), worn wheels and bearings due to misalignment, and issues with the limit switches that control hoist travel.
Is it better to repair or replace an old crane?
This is a key decision. Repair is usually cost-effective for minor component failures. Replacement may be necessary if the crane structure is compromised, major components are obsolete, or if the cost of repair exceeds 50-60% of a new crane’s price. Modernising (e.g., updating controls or hoists) is a middle ground that can extend the life of a structurally sound crane.
How long does a typical overhead crane repair take?
The duration varies significantly based on the issue. A minor electrical fix might take a few hours. A major repair like replacing a hoist motor, gearbox, or bridge wheels could take several days, especially if specialised parts need to be ordered.
